These artists were chosen during the jurying process to be given the opportunity to showcase a broader range of their work. Through painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture, these six truly represent the diversity of emerging artistic talent in Massachusetts.”

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait...

Portrait Salon 2012

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery has been, for several years, the premier award of its kind in the UK. However, recently it is being given a run for its money by the newer, hipper, Portrait Salon.

2012 is the second year of Portrait Salon. It started as “a form of Salon des Refusés - an exhibition of works rejected from a juried art show - which has a long tradition as a fringe way of showcasing artists’ work that may otherwise go unseen. Devised by Carole Evans and James O Jenkins, Portrait Salon aims to show the best of the unselected entries from the annual National Portrait Gallery Photographic Portrait Prize. We figure that, out of the 6000+ rejected entries, there are excellent portraits which deserve to be seen.”

Two of the works selected for Portrait Salon’s inspiring 2012 show are by Alys Tomlinson (see more Alys in d4.5 Winter Notes On Summer Impressions and d4.7 You Can’t Always Get What You Want.) All of this year’s selection can be viewed on Portrait Salon’s site, and in the Portrait Salon Newspaper.

“Katya Evdokimova’s photo project is a visual commentary on brand dependence and a consumerist philosophy of living… Ms Evdokimova draws attention to a destructive tendency that is becoming apparent in the process of a voluntary suppression of a personality and replacing it by a brand. It is evident that the photographer plays with two translations of the word ‘brand’: a logo and a body mark.”

Homelands describes itself as a group of “emerging story tellers, photographers, visual poets and filmmakers attempting to collaborate and promote emotive long term projects on our homelands; be that born, adoptive or connected… The purpose is to exchange ideas – and contradictions – about Europe and Europeans through exchanging places, and working on a yearly group theme.”

There are currently nine members, originating from Poland, the UK, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania and Germany.
“Contemporary Visions is the first group exhibition at the newly relocated Beers.Lambert Contemporary in its new premises on City Road. The exhibition presents 10 contemporary international artists, (selected from an pool of nearly 1800 applicants worldwide) who each question the destability of the image and of presence. The collective point of departure for each of the artists is precisely how a vision of reality becomes translated through the artistic frame of reference. The selected artists work in all media and within all genres of art - from figurative to abstract and even conceptual, each being selected for an artistic practice that somehow perceives reality as one that has been fragmented, reconstructed, and destabilized.”

Among the artists whose work is on show is Gigi Cifali (see more Gigi in d4.7, You Can’t Always Get What You Want).

A rather special Olympic souvenir.

Just over a week ago British cycling hero Bradley Wiggins rode through Hampton Wick on his way to winning a gold medal in the Men’s Cycling Time Trial at the London Olympics. In the crowds cheering him on was Ben Roberts, who was also taking photographs.
One of the images has been so popular that Ben and Metro Imaging have created a limited edition of 50 prints. They are 10” x 8”, printed on Hahnehmuhle Photo Rag 308gsm paper: £55, with £5 of every sale being donated to the Bradley Wiggins Foundation.

Alnis Stakle’s exhibition of bleakly beautiful landscape photography ”Not Even Something” is running until Sunday July 8th as part of the Summer of Photography at BOZAR.

“Cities are divided into areas, and the identity of each area is characterised by some peculiar features. For instance, industrial areas, housing areas, central areas, banking areas, etc. These urban areas are joined by non-places which do not perform any significant functions in the urban environment, but just exist and thus, fill the emptiness between meaningful urban areas. In ‘Not Even Something’ Alnis Stakle explores these areas during desolate winter nights. Transformed by artificial light, these images show interesting similarities with the romanticist tradition in landscape painting. The works in these series do not feature any specific geographic area or a real event; rather, they convey the inextricable links between the imagined and the real in the interpretation of landscapes and landscape photography.”

Kirk Ellingham’s photojournalism...

Kalisz revisited

Kirk Ellingham’s photojournalism Postcards from Kalisz was one of the highlights of D4.9 Modern Love. A year after completing the project, Kirk went back to Poland with Monika, whose family featured in the original work. The new work is entitled Lost Dreams, White Fever.

He says, “I travelled with Monika just after Christmas 2011 to visit her family again. We went to see her cousin and her new baby and her grandmother and the land her brother had bought outside the city. Snow had fallen and the weight of a new year after Christmas was heavy as lead in the air. We talked of family history, of tragedy and love, of the despair of men and their vodka dreams and the heavy burden of mothers and of daughters. We spoke of lost dreams and walked in a white fever that cold January week in Poland.”

The new images are black-and-white, the new version of Kalisz seems to have faded back in time, or moved further away from the 21st-century. It’s a gorgeous set of pictures, and a thought-provoking visual meditation on the way a family and a community develops.

www.kirkellingham.com

Links We Like is the section...

New work on DayFour Links We Like

Links We Like is the section of the DayFour website which highlights occasional photographers or projects that have caught my attention, usually people who have got in touch through the website.

I’ve just added three new links: Katherine Green’s 1948 Olympians is a fascinating portrait project, one of the more original and interesting ideas generated around this summer’s London games, plus she has an exhibition taking place right now in Tokarska Gallery, London E17.

Hind Land is an unusual landscape photography project currently in progress, a collaboration between photographers Nick Rochowski and Tim Bowditch, which will be presented at the upcoming Arles festival.

Struggle for a Normal Life, by documentary photographer Lorenzo Masi, spotlights the plight of Somali refugees in Rome and Florence. It’s an important piece of reportage with beautiful photographs.

I’ve also restored some older links, some to photographers who’ve since contributed to DayFour and others I’m still working on…

DayFour contributor Julieta Sans is moving and has to find a home for some beautiful picture frames. She says, “I have 14 lovely handmade frames from an exhibition I had in Barcelona two years ago. They were made by the best framer in Barcelona. They are double glass, with a painted one inch wooden border and the following sizes:
5 frames 64 x 83 cm
3 frames 83 x 83 cm
6 frames 94 x 94 cm
They’re in good shape but need some cleaning and a couple of them have a small chip in one of the corners. I’m of course willing to let them go for a fraction of the 2,500 euros they cost.”

The London Festival of Photography 2012 is taking place in 18 venues around London this month. One of the major exhibitions is “The Great British Public” at Dog Eared Gallery, near King’s Cross. It is a group show with “a stellar collection of British artists,” including Martin Parr, Zed Nelson, and Ben Roberts (see more Ben in d4.7 You Can’t Always Get What You Want.) However, all good things must come to an end and the show will finally close next week. You’ve got a couple more days to catch it before theprintspace’s next event launches on June 13th.
